Course Critique
The training is designed principally to avoid violent confrontations, much of the training day will be concentrating on dealing with aggression and on the environment however, it is unfortunate in today’s society that front line staff are subjected to abuse and physical attack,
There are two options I am happy to offer:
OPTION 1
1. Aggression training, examining our own and others behaviours the aims and objectives are listed below. This training is without the physical aspect has been delivered to the Library Service; Housing Officers; Environmental Health; Caretaking staff and the Councils Greens Patrols and Security Officers in Havering Council. It was found that the Officers attending felt that they needed some basic training on their self defence which was not asked for by their relevant Heads of Service. However, it made these officers consider their and others behaviours.
Option 1 Requirement for the Course
9am to 12:30pm Classroom for the morning session or hall area set aside
12:30pm to 1:15pm Lunch 1:15 to 2pm Classroom for the morning session or hall area set aside
2pm to 4 pm Scenarios based on learning above
It is also recommended that a supervisor should be in attendance in order that they have an understanding of what has been taught, discussed and they will understand why an Officer has taken a particular course of action.
OPTION 2
2. As above, but to include non confrontational defence tactics against wrist holds and strangle holds which require some physical training in a sensitive setting, this training is for the benefit of a member of staff who has unfortunately found themselves in a position where they are being assaulted.
It is recommended that these skills should be refreshed every 6 months (not mandatory) to maintain a level of competence in the self defence tactics and to discuss in a closed forum the Officers experiences.
This is a full days training 9am to 5pm, all delegates will be required to sign a health questionnaire to ensure that the training is adapted to suit their personal needs. This questionnaire will not be disclosed to a third party and is for the benefit of the trainer and delegate only.
Loose clothing should be worn with trainers, the methods used are those approved by the Home Office Police Self Defence training. There will be no need for individuals to engage in body throws and it will be appreciated that there may be a considerable difference in fitness levels, and no member of staff will be made to feel embarrassed by any activity.
Option 2 Requirement for the Course
9am to 12:30pm Classroom for the morning session or hall area set aside
12:30pm to 1:15pm Lunch 1:15 to 2pm Classroom for the morning session or hall area set aside
2pm to 5 pm Hall activity for self defence training
About the Trainer
I have 30 years experience in the Metropolitan Police and have recently retired. During my Service I taught Police, Civil Staff, Traffic Wardens and Neighbourhood Wardens aggression training and self defence tactics as approved by the Home Office. I also adapted this training and delivered it to suit the needs of Havering’s Community Wardens (the aims and objectives below).
This training without the physical aspect has also been delivered to the Library Service; Housing Officers; Environmental Health; Caretaking staff and the Councils Greens Patrols and Security Officers in Havering Council. I have recently set up my own company in a Self Employed basis in the name ‘Phil’ Your Mind continuing to deliver the training in a private capacity.
I was also Havering Partnerships Local Authority anti social behaviour co-ordinator for 4 years and have a good knowledge of community problems, ASB legislation, housing issues and empathy with staff dealing with such a problem.
I have also recently delivered this training to Basildon Warden Service which was well received.
Aim
To provide delegates with an understanding of dealing with potential or violent incidents and examining how their own behaviour can adversely effect the behaviour of others.
At the end of the session the delegates should be able to:
- Discuss and have an understanding of what is aggression, assertiveness and submissive behaviours are.
- Examine ways of dealing with such behaviours.
- Identify incidents where they have used or been the victim of these behaviours.
- Look at how attitude affects behaviour.
- Discuss the principle of ‘contact’ and ‘cover’.
- Discuss that retreating from an aggressive incident is not being submissive.
- Understand the law in relation to the use of force and self defence.
- Practice the principle of the keeping outside the fighting arch and safe distances.
- Have an awareness of your environment.
- Discuss the need to ensure accurate evidence is collected following any incident.
- Role play scenarios for all delegates to ensure learning has taken place and to practice learning techniques as above in a safe learning environment.
Cost
£500 per training session for 2 trainers, To ensure full participation I recommend that only 8 delegates attend each course, this also allows plenty of time for delegates to take part in role play scenarios and provide feed back to each other.
